...a different kind of season for the HVGO, but we're still here

October 1st, 2020
A message from Artistic Director Joseph Ricker

Dear friends, family, fans and supporters,

We miss you and hope that you are weathering this difficult time as well as can be expected. I am happy to report that the Happy Valley Guitar Orchestra will be in action this year, although our season will be different than usual. Our primary concern is to only operate in a way that is safe and responsible given the evolving conditions of the pandemic. Within that framework we will continue our work to keep Avant-Garde community music thriving right here, right now.
In September, our board, our players, our partners at the Northampton Center for the Arts and myself considered whether we should return to in-person rehearsals at 33 Hawley St in Northampton. We decided to proceed with a smaller core group of ten committed players rehearsing (masked) in a space large enough for 12 feet of physical distance between players. Although we are not anticipating any live performances this year, we will be partnering with the Shea Theatre in Turners Falls in a residency during which we will create a video record of our work this season to share with you in the coming months. You can expect to hear HVGO’s take on compositions by Gabriel Faure, Fryderyk Chopin, Herbie Hancock and much more. We thank the NCFA, the Shea Theatre and all supporters of the HVGO. We couldn’t do it without you.

I believe that music is an essential act of humanity, of compassion, of community. With grave challenges on so many fronts, it is needed now. The great lutenist Hopkinson Smith said it best in a recent video message:

“Music is close to the root of humanity. In this time of unprecedented uncertainty, let music’s boundless generosity inspire us to the highest levels of social justice.”

Yours in music,
Joseph Ricker

P.S. The HVGO still needs financial support from the community to keep on doing what we do. Please give as generously as you can to help us through this difficult time and so that we can still be here when our cultural life can resume in full. Thank you.

The finest in avant-garde community music is happening right here in the Valley. Show your support for the Happy Valley Guitar Orchestra and keep this organization thriving! We can't do it without you!

HVGO is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation established in 2009.
